about

Nick Onley

I'm a musician (sax, flute, guitar and voice) doing a range of gigs and sessions - pub gigs with bands, open mics, and daytime sessions with people with Alzheimers and their carers. I also do some busking and the occasional recording session - and that's how I came to work with Matteo, who spotted me busking round the corner from his studio and invited me to come and have a jam. Since then we've had a lot of fun and produced some interesting tracks using looped beats, percussion and other sampled instruments recorded in the studio, including my flute and sax.
I came across Joy of Sound through a friend, and was inspired by my first experience of their work at a session in Vauxhall early in 2015. They had achieved something I had imagined when running sessions with people with learning difficulties years earlier, but not been able to realise: working with a group to create musical pieces in which everyone participated fully, and in which everyone's contribution was valued and acknowledged. A few months later the JOS founder William invited me to find some other brass players to contribute to the sessions at the Redmond Centre which have been the basis for all the tracks on this album.
The regular format for Joy of Sound's sessions includes all comers - singing, clapping and playing guitars, ukuleles and a range of adapted and purpose-built instruments. For the Redmond sessions this was expanded to include our brass section, a string section and a group of classically trained singers - potentially a chaotic mix, but well-orchestrated before each piece to create a rich and truly joyful sound.
Our piece doesn't really give a sense of that range, but does incorporate the power of many voices singing together, along with Matteo's creative looped rhythm and beats - it was a pleasure to weave some sax and flute into the mix, then watch Matteo the magician piece all the elements together.
